I found this on the wonderful Old Book Illustrations [1] blog. It’s from Les merveilles de l’industrie (The wonders of industry) [2], an 1871 celebration of technological achievements [3] written by Louis Figuier.
If you root around that blog, you’ll find plenty more of these illustrations, from Peruvian pottery [4] to contemporary factory machinery [5]. Look elsewhere on the web, and you can find wonderful things [6].
There’s plenty of information about the brilliant Dr. Figuier [7] (also the author of Earth Before the Deluge [8]) on the web, but not so much on the visionary M. (or Mlle.) Broux.
