Ants don’t actually spin webs.

This striking image is one of what will ultimately be more than 11,700 photographs – no, wait, multiply by three, 35,100 photographs, three of every species of ant on Earth. Face, body from the top, body in profile. Small and mysterious and surprising. World Ant Curator Barry Bolton and other researchers from the California Academy of Sciences want the world to know how important and beautiful ants are. They do wind up just about everywhere, and do some pretty amazing things.

The BBC has a slideshow with a few pertinent stories about some of those amazing things. Or, you can plunge headfirst into the Antweb itself.
