As far as I can tell, the name of the volume from which this illustration came means “The Joy of Insects.”
I’m not making that up.
A.J. Rösel von Rosenhof was a member of the European aristocracy who left his Austrian home to go be brilliant in Denmark, painting miniatures for the royal family in the 1700s. Luckily, he didn’t spend all his time with tiny doll furniture and gave us some great likenesses of little creatures. He also really loved frogs. Really loved frogs.
