SOURCE: Based on “New Planet Is Closest Yet: Earth-Size Lava World a Space ‘Landmark'”, National Geographic, 17 October 2012, as used in the post “We’ve got a neighbor (in Alpha Centauri).”
ABSTRACT: I’ve been spending a lot of time lately trying to make this abandoned house suitable to live in, so I do a lot of thinking about thickets and empty lots and buildings that might be there but might not.
Then there’s this “Earth-like” planet around Alpha Centauri, they say now, except it’s not Earth-like at all – it’s covered in lava and basically a big floating oven. But there *could* be something more like us. Is there? Right there? 4.3 light years away? Next door? Someone new?
That’d be something, wouldn’t it?
Lyrics:
When the sky grows dim
Then we find the stars
Is it just the wind
Or a distant car?The streets are dark
Only branches sway
On this empty block
Look across the way* Is there a light – In a window?
* Can you see if someone’s home?
* Go take a look through the shadows?
* Are we alone?In four-point-three
Years, the phone might ring
our telescopes
might detect something…* Is there a light – In a window?
* Can you see if someone’s home?
* Go take a look through the shadows?
* Are we alone? That driveway leads
To a house-shaped hole
Stay close by me
Let’s go…Let’s go…
Let’s go…Let’s go…Let’s go…* Is there a light – In a window?
* Can you see if someone’s home?
* Go take a look through the shadows?
* Are we alone? Are we alone? Are we alone? Are we alone? Are we alone?
