SONG: Let Them In (Voluntary Schistosomiasis)

SONG: “Let Them In (Voluntary Schistosomiasis)”.

ARTIST: grant.

SOURCE: Science, 21 Feb 2018, “Seventeen volunteers let this worm live inside them to help defeat a dangerous disease”, as used in the post “So these folks infect themselves with this parasitic worm to figure out how to cure this disease…”.

ABSTRACT:
Yes, this song is two days late, so I shall be covering a cover, probably horribly, sometime soon.

I had music sort of set up for this (more or less) a week ago, then couldn’t really get lyrics to work right. Then came that story about people infecting themselves with tiny parasites, and yes, people have to know.

The thoughts have nothing to do with the optimistic groove of the music, but… counterpoint, right?

The music – the hook, anyway – also somehow came to kind of resemble a Clash song, even though I recorded it while earwormed by a 90s song I had forgotten existed until a recent plunge into the Fight Like Apes corpus surfaced this cover of it. And I was like, “Oh yeah, for a year or so that song was everywhere.” And then, “It was kind of catchy.” And then, “I can see how that was put together.”

LYRICS

Let them in (Voluntary Schistosomiasis)

It itches where they touch my waiting arm
tiny welts in growing swarms, let unfamiliar proteins form

Under glass, they go out where it’s warm
Who knows how the river bends, I’m getting used to my new friends.

^^ Pre CH: I can take it on the chin,
Feel the sacrifices spin
crawling underneath my skin
Let them in, let them in,

CH: let them in, let them in,
let them in, let them in

Teeming millions in their river beds
Sensing someone swimming near, drawn to ankles, feet and legs

Always wanting just a little more,
I give up what I can to understand how one might close the door

^^ Pre CH: I can take it on the chin,
Take vaccine shots and look within
crawling underneath my skin
Let them in, let them in,

CH: let them in, let them in,
let them in, let them in

I feel the danger twist in my insides,
breeding in my liver
My blood rising like the tides

Microscopic eggs amass inside
Is this the way that tainted feels, or can it be a point of pride?

^^ Pre CH: I can take it on the chin,
Feel the sacrifices spin
crawling underneath my skin
Let them in, let them in,

CH: let them in, let them in,
let them in, let them in
