Here’s a picture of a distinctive bit of geography. There are hobbits down there, and members of Split Enz and The Chills, and some of Taika Waititi’s relatives too. Here’s how the photographer describes her image: “Like Italy, New Zealand’s distinct shape & features are usually easy to spot from space. But this mission it’s been hiding under rain clouds so this is my first glimpse.”
That’s Samantha Cristoforetti, I.S.S. astronaut, soon to be commander of Expedition 68. She’s up in orbit now as U.S. Orbital Section Lead of the Minerva mission, part of Expedition 67. I found the image in the ESA archive, where you can also learn more about what Minerva is accomplishing now.
