This is a recreation of a weird ecosystem – one without any beef, basically. The Chinle formation, a primordial swamp in what is now New Mexico, didn’t have any large herbivores to convert plants into meat. Instead, the carnivores seem to have all eaten each other.
This is a phytosaur – a long-snouted aquatic hunter like a crocodile – about to take down a rauisuchian – a long-legged predator more like a small allosaur, capable of hopping onto dry land to seek out prey.
From Earth Archives, which I found via Scientific Illustration.
