SONG: Taste the Wind

SONG: “Taste the Wind”.

ARTIST: grant.

SOURCE: Nature, 13 Aug 2018, “Spacecraft sets off to make humanity’s closest approach to the Sun”, as used in the post “Tasting the solar wind”.

ABSTRACT:
I’ve been listening to a lot of BRONCHO this week, and I really like the way this came together.

Used basically the same toolkit as with the cover four days ago: ring modulator with distortion, super-similar drum loop (with less electronic-sounding drums), and the addition of a real bass along with the fake-Rhodes being a fake bass. So yeah, two basses. Two reverbs. Two amp emulators. Lots of distortion/bitcrushing/ring-modulation.

Shoegaze crunchiness is a mode I favor.

I also maybe shouldn’t admit this, but I actually used phi to figure out where to put the “solo”. Picked the tempo, made the drum beat, figured I wanted a little less than 4 minutes, then divided the total number of measures by 1.61803398874 (a number I’ve got memorized thanks to this old song) to determine where to drop a marker for where things should change.

The “24 circles” are the number of orbits PSP will take to dip into the corona, passing beyond the Alfven surface into the outer reaches of the sun’s magnetic halo, insulated by layers of carbon foam.

LYRICS:

Inside the Alfven Surface
Underneath the carbon foam
The Parker Solar Probe
Sends its message home

Pre-CH:
When the day breaks – When the magnets
Follow lines to either side
When the wind blows – Don’t need no windows
To see the night…

CH:
You strip away – the charge
You strip away – all things
You let the plasma in…
And we can taste the wind

Alpha particles… leftover helium
It’s lighter than air
…24 circles to solar flares
…24 circles to solar flares

Pre-CH:
When the day breaks – When the magnets
Follow lines to either side
When the wind blows – Don’t need no windows
To see the night…

CH:
You strip away – the charge
(Strip away, you’re ionized)
You strip away – all things
You let the plasma in…
(Strip away your hydrogen)
And we can taste the wind

You strip away – the charge
(Strip away, you’re ionized)
You strip away – all things
You let the plasma in…
(Strip away your hydrogen)
And we can taste the wind
