I wasn’t sure if this really counted as a scientific illustration, despite finding it in the Biodiversity Heritage Library, since most of the other plates in this book are really about hunting rabbits. But it is definitely a natural history. The title page kind of encapsulates what I mean: The Rabbit by James Edmund Harting, with a Chapter on COOKERY by Alexander Innes Shand.
There’s also a lovely image of a stoat hunting rabbits near the beginning.
It’s the Chinese New Year today, welcoming the Year of the Rabbit. May all of us outrun the owls at our back this year (yet may none of us go hungry).
